Fox Chapel Tryout Information

Tryouts for all FCHC teams will take place on May 19, 2024 with a supplemental session on May 22 for those who can’t make their primary tryout session, as well as for others upon the request of coaches. All tryouts will take place at Alpha Ice Complex which will also be the home ice for our club. This coming season we hope to be able to field four teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity and two middle school teams (MS1 and MS2). 

5/19/24 Tryouts:

Middle School - 5:00 - 5:50pm

High School- 6:00 - 6:50pm

5/22/24 Supplemental Session: 

Middle School - 7:00 - 7:40pm

High School- 7:40 - 8:20pm

Before you register for tryouts, please consider the following information related to our team placement process and philosophy. 

The FCHC Board of Directors empowers our coaching staff to select players based on coach assessments of talent and skill; therefore, tryouts will be closed to spectators, allowing our coaches to focus on the process.  Coaches also have decision rights for team placement based on tryout evaluations and the parameters for each team (outlined below). These parameters support league requirements, coach objectives, and the continued growth of our club. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL

In recent years we have been fortunate to have two middle school teams based on the high degree of interest. We hope to roster two teams again, to help create a full pipeline of players progressing into high school. 

More developed and more experienced players will be placed on Middle School 1 (MS1) which competes in the PIHL league. Player development will be a focus for MS2 which participates in the Alpha Tournament Company league. 

Middle School 1 (Practice 1x per week, typically Sunday 4:30 pm – 5:20 pm)

Eligible players need to be entering grades 6-8. PIHL away games can be anywhere in SWPA. 

Middle School 2 (Practice 1 x per week, typically Sunday 4:30 pm – 5:20 pm, games typically held Sunday/Monday around 9pm)

Eligible players need to be entering grades 6-8. Home and away games are typically held at Alpha Ice, Shadyside Academy and Pittsburgh Ice Arena. At the discretion of coaches, MS2 players can also be rostered on MS1 for a call-up situation but, with the exception of goalies, this is not typically done.

HIGH SCHOOL

Both Junior Varsity and Varsity teams participate in PIHL. Players will be rostered based on coach assessments, with the goal of having two teams competing at a high level and ending the season in contention for championships. 

Varsity (Practice 2x per week, typically Sunday 5:50 pm – 6:50 pm and Wednesdays 5:00 pm – 6:20 pm)

Eligible players need to be entering grades 9-12. Varsity team typically plays 20 games per season.  To be eligible to earn a letter from the FC Athletic Department, players must dress for ½ of the games. To be eligible to participate in playoffs, the player must also have been rostered for ½ of the regular season games.   There is an exception to that process if a player was injured.   

Junior Varsity (Practice 2x per week, typically Sunday 5:00 pm – 5:50 pm and Wednesday  5:00 – 6:20 pm)

Eligible players need to be entering grades 9-12. JV team typically plays 16-20 games per season. To be eligible to participate in playoffs, the player must also have been rostered for ½ of the regular season games.   There is an exception to that process if a player was injured.
